The South County Federation voted unanimously (1/13/15) to support the scenic Cliffs of Occoquan Trail. A big step!  The PHTA/Fairfax Trails and Streams has advocated for this several times at the group's monthly meetings, and at recent public hearings.  But opposition is strong from Fairfax Water. This one is worth fighting for! With Vulcan Quarry, they come before the Fairfax Co. Planning Commission on Feb. 12 to propose vastly enlarging the quarry at Lorton and eventually turning it into a reservoir.  The project is subject to compliance with the Countywide Trails Plan, which specifies a trail along the entire Fairfax County shore of the Occoquan River.  This route, through dense woodland, has spectacular views of the river far below.   Please contact...

Here are photos from our Dec. 13 work trip at Bles Park. We had 13 volunteers, including five Elders from the Latter Day Saints, five PHTA members and local residents. We cleared 1.4 miles of the Potomac Heritage National Scenic Trail. The weather was great and we all had a good time. ...

UPDATE 12/5  We are postponing this to Sat. Dec. 13, 9-noon, due to rain.  Hope to see you there! Dec. 6, 9am: Meet at Bles Park, Ashburn VA, 9am-noon.  With Potomac Appalachian Trail Club.  Clear overgrown 0.7 mile section of Potomac Heritage National Scenic Trail; sidehill to make treadway level.  Create several loop trail options. This will extend 5 miles of continuous Potomac Heritage Trail north/west of parking area to Elizabeth Mills Park, Kephart Landing Park, and Coton Bridge over Goose Creek. In the future we hope to extend the trail east to Algonkian Park where there are 11 completed miles to Great Falls Park.
