In late August, the Fairfax County Park Authority removed a gigantic downed tree blocking a CCT fairweather crossing near Leigh Mill Road, Great Falls.  On Oct. 3, Fairfax Trails and Streams improved the CCT ford at Little Difficult Run, that had partially washed out. The 7-man FCPA crew included Chris Trivett (Backhoe operator), Daniel Tigges (Chainsaw operator on stream bank), Stephen Bosworth (Chainsaw operator in stream), Christopher Lee, Paul Faaborg, Thomas Curry and Phil Williams.   On Oct. 3, Fairfax Trails and Streams voluneers improved a Cross County Trail ford at Little Difficult Run south of Lawyers Road in Oakton.  The crew was Ed Pickens, Victor Litwinski, Mike Geltner and me.  We raised the level of the stones by about 6 inches and made them solid,...

UPDATE 10/3/14:  The Bles Park worktrip is moved to Dec.6, 9am; a new worktrip at Piscataway Park is scheduled for Nov. 15. We will hold at least three worktrips this fall, in cooperation with other volunteer groups.  On Oct.18, we will continue constructing a new mile-long trail along Cub Run in Bull Run Regional Park, Centreville, VA.  On Nov. 15, we will maintain/extend the PHNST at North Piscataway Park, Ft. The Potomac Heritage Trail from Goose Creek to Bles Park is in its best shape ever. Compared to this time a year ago, the trail is more beaten-in, and less overgrown. Word-of-mouth is spreading.  The trailhead at Riverside Parkway (Coton Bridge) has been widened and made more prominent (see before and after photos below), with signage that invites passersby to explore the whole 5 miles to Bles Park. The trail parallels an old canal intended to go up Goose Creek from the Potomac to Aldie.  The owner went bankrupt, but exactly ONE barge made the trip.  The area looks a lot like sections of the C&O or parts of the canal systems in Great Falls National Park.  The PHTA posted a...
