I have been an outdoor enthusiast for the last few decades and back in 2009, left an 18 year career in Information Technology so I could go hug trees and eventually become a park ranger.  I suppose that I just got tired of sitting in a cubicle, staring at a computer screen, regardless of how much I got paid to do it.
Currently, I'm the Web Master for the Potomac Heritage Trail Association and work as a Senior Park Ranger for the Northern Virginia Regional Park Authority at Algonkian Regional Park.
My avatar for this blog is my dog Samwise who unfortunately had to be put down a while back due to cancer. He was my ever present hiking buddy and is greatly missed.
HEAR YE HEAR YE!!! I'm pleased to announce that as part of the NVA Trail Fest on May 2 that was announced here, there will be 2 kayak tours that explore sections of Potomac River water trails. Take lots of pics and be prepared to share your experiences with your fellow trail fest attendees! Friday April 17, Whites Ford Regional Park to Algonkian Regional Park (14+ miles). This is a weekday but boy what a perfect day to play hooky from work :-) We'll meet at the gravel lot next to the Algonkian boat launch at 8:00AM. ***NOTE*** - There's nothing of significance water hazard wise in the route but it is a long paddle so be prepared to spend all day...

I'd like to share with you our vision for what we have in mind for the Algonkian Nature Preserve here at Algonkian Regional Park over the coming years. This is not an expansion of the existing park but rather an effort to re-task a specific area that historically has not been managed for any particular purpose and has generally been inaccessible to our park patrons.
