I'd like to share with you our vision for what we have in mind for the Algonkian Nature Preserve here at Algonkian Regional Park over the coming years. This is not an expansion of the existing park but rather an effort to re-task a specific area that historically has not been managed for any particular purpose and has generally been inaccessible to our park patrons. The Algonkian Nature Preserve is bordered by the Algonkian driving range to the West, the Algonkian golf course and Old Sugarland Run to the South, Trump National golf course to the East, and the Potomac River to the North. The following image shows the area we are talking about and provides information on the existing and...

On Sunday November 10 Bill and I worked on improving a ditch crossing for horses that gets deep with mud at times. Although we have improved it we are not finished and our plan is to put in more river stone so that the crossing is safe.  Give us some time and we will get to it.  We also put up some horse signs (wooden signs with horseshoes on them- along the horse reroute we marked with orange ribbons)  I think the horses have found it because the trail is getting worn in!!  Horray!!  Keep using it and wear it in.     The Seneca Park property is owned by the Northern Virginia Regional Park Authority.  If you need to report...

Notable Proposed VDOT-related Trail Projects for Fairfax County’s 6-year plan An interactive map showing 214 proposed trail/transportation projects for Fairfax County, in or near VDOT right-of-way, is now available at  http://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/fcdot/cdot/map.htm A one-page description of each project is available at http://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/fcdot/pdf/cdot/cdot_all.pdf Not all the projects will make the final list. You have the opportunity to vote for your favorite projects at https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/DGPZVQV (DEADLINE NOV. 22, 2013), or to come to a series of four public meetings in November. This blog presents our choices, explains how the online survey works, and lists the public meetings. Many of these projects directly benefit the major volunteer-maintained long county trails we have advocated—the Potomac Heritage National Scenic Trail (PHNST), the Cross County Trail (CCT), and the...

On 10/16/13 I hiked the trail all the way from Seneca Rd to the gas pipeline.  One of the horseback riders e-mailed me to report some issues.  It is very helpful for people to help me with knowig where problems are because I can't be everywhere!!  I am attaching some pictures I took-  there is flooding on approximately 100-150 feet of the trail.  At the time I saw it the trail was under about 2 inches of water. (picture attached) This is flooding from Old Sugarland Run overflowing.  Just before where the trail makes a left turn to go across Old Sugarland Run there is a water discharge pipe that was actively discharging water.  Most likely the trail flooding occurred because of that water...
