UPDATE 4/17  Keep the calls and e-mails coming!  Mt. Vernon Supervisor Gerry Hyland is pushing to make this happen.   UPDATE 3/28   On March 26, the Planning Commission punted the Cliffs of Occoquan Trail decision to the Board of Supervisors, who hold a public hearing on this issue April 28. Please tell them "I support the Cliffs of Occoquan Trail at Fairfax Water" (703-324-3151 or clerktotheBOS@fairfaxcounty.gov). Better yet, come to the Fx County Govt. Center public hearing on early evening of April 28 (this has the impact of 20 people sending e-mail). The Planning Commission said they were "inundated" with pro-trail e-mail; we'll make sure the Supervisors see these. But new ones direct to the Supervisors are best.Please share widely!!...

UPDATE (3/27)  Our worktrip Saturday has been postponed due to wet weather.  We will select a new date in the near future. UPDATE (3/23):  Our next worktrip March 28 (9am - noon) will begin at shopping center at Route 1 and Armistead Road in Lorton (near the IHOP). The trail starts just across the Route 1 crosswalk and continues almost a mile through woods to Old Colchester Road. This is a joint project with MORE and Fairfax Trails and Streams. Call 703-324-2865 or e-mail plancom@fairfaxcounty.gov  by FEB. 25.  UPDATE:  Strong pro-trail testimony at public hearing 2/12.  For details on this amazing trail opportunity see my Lorton Valley Star article and my Jan 17 and Nov 13 blogs below. PHTA is working with No. Va. Regional Park Authority (NVRPA) and other groups to create a celebration event for trails in Northern Virginia.   Events start at Algonkian Park at different times, and end there in time for barbecue lunch at 1PM: 8 am:  KAYAK TRIP:  Shuttle departs Algonkian for Kephart Landing for kayak trip to Algonkian.  8:30 am:  9-MILE HIKE:  Shuttle departs Algonkian for Riverbend Park for 9-mile hike back.  There is the option to arrange to park at Riverbend and kayak back to Riverbend after the lunch (contact freewalkers.org) 10 am    4-MILE HIKE:    Shuttle departs Algonkian for the end of Seneca Road for 4-mile hike back. Virginia State Senator Hanger has introduced a budget amendment, SB-800, which would buy the Dahlgren Railroad Heritage Trail (DRHT) in King George County for inclusion in the state park system.  PHTA board member Jim Lynch asks trail enthusiasts to contact their Virginia State Senator to support this bill.  For more on the DRHT--maps, events, photos, please see  http://www.friendsdrht.org/            ...
